Teach with Africa works to break down the economic and social barriers to education in Africa by sending teams of educators to implement projects in underserved communities through an exchange of teaching and learning.
By integrating their experiences into curricula and educational programs after their return to the United States, these educators will enhance opportunities for African and U.S. students to enrich their educational experiences and identify themselves as "global citizens" through authentic connections, ongoing dialogue and shared learning.

Building Blocks is a proactive pre-school program to give slum children a good foundation in English language, arithmetic, general science, social and practical life skills at an early age of 3½ years through a fun, comprehensive curriculum. Normally these children would not have the opportunity to go to any early learning course due to economic difficulties. However we have been able to fulfill this dream to receive an education totally free through the help of caring sponsors and corporate funding.
Apart from a quality education, the children are also provided a nutritious meal daily, periodic medical checkups and a clean and fun environment to attend six days a week!
About the benefactors
All the children who attend Building Blocks are from utterly poor families. If they were not in our school they would be wandering in very un-hygienic conditions on the streets all day long without much food intake. Some would be taking care of their younger siblings. Their parents, who are normally construction labourers, would have left for work very early in the morning, only to return after sunset. These young children normally have no access to clean water or toilet facilities and so are normally prone to all kinds of health problems and malnutrition.
Statistics from NSSO
There are millions of children in India who lack the chance to receive a basic education. According to a report done by the NSSO’s 2007 report on education, the literacy rate in India is 52%. An estimated 38% of children will start 1st grade, but only about 15% of these of which will complete the 5th grade. This means that only less than 6% of children complete 5th grade!
Mission Statement
Building Blocks is committed to breaking the poverty cycle in India by providing a free, fun-filled, safe, quality pre-school education accompanied with nutritious meals and medical checkups. We are making it possible for hundreds of slum children to enter quality English medium schools every year! |
